Joe Atkin, CIO at PV3 Enterprises
Building to Exit: What I Wish I Knew Sooner
Mr. Atkin is an experienced entrepreneur, investor, and business leader focused on helping entrepreneurs build strong companies and teams that improve people’s lives. His personal and professional mission centers on helping people find greater hope and confidence, which has influenced his work across industries including healthcare, consumer products, education, real estate, and investment.
He has helped lead eight companies and has been involved in building several category-creating businesses, including GOAL ZERO, Owlet, and MTN OPS, with several successful exits. As CEO of GOAL ZERO, he grew the company from its inception in 2009 to nearly $40 million in revenue within four years and led its 2014 sale to NRG Energy. As President of Owlet Baby Care (NASDAQ: OWLT), he led commercialization efforts for its infant health-monitoring products. At MTN OPS, he led revenue growth and helped oversee the sale of a majority stake to Norwest Venture Partners.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Atkin worked at Sorenson Capital, a Utah-based private equity firm with $1.5 billion in assets under management, where he held strategic consulting and operating roles with portfolio companies. He also served as VP of Marketing for the American Institute of Gastric Banding, the leading LAP-BAND surgery network, where he launched a new brand and a successful multi-million-dollar marketing campaign.
Mr. Atkin currently serves as Chief Investment Officer of PV3 Enterprises, a Utah-based family office, and as CEO of the Utah Motorsports Campus in Tooele, Utah, one of the firm’s principal investments. In this role, he focuses on rebuilding teams, culture, and the facility to establish the campus as a world-class motorsport destination.
Overall, he has held leadership positions including CEO, President, CFO, and VP of Marketing at companies ranging from $1 million to $100 million in revenue, raised more than $500 million in equity, and completed strategic consulting work for companies such as Black & Decker and Intel. He has international work experience in Chile, Costa Rica, and Austria and is multilingual.
Mr. Atkin holds an MBA and a B.S. in Economics from Brigham Young University. He is married to Jamie Atkin, and they have four children
