Maverik’s Growth Story: Financial Strategy, Leadership, and Scale
Curtis Williams grew up in Orem, Utah. After graduating from high school, he served a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Johannesburg, South Africa. Upon returning home, he attended Brigham Young University, where he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in accounting. While at BYU, Curtis met his wife, Audrey Davis. They have been married for 27 years and are the proud parents of four children.
Following graduation, Curtis began his professional career with Deloitte & Touche in Kansas City, Missouri, where he also obtained his Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license. He later joined Inergy, L.P., a master limited partnership engaged in propane distribution and natural gas storage, where he gained valuable experience in the energy sector.
After a decade in Missouri, Curtis returned to Utah to join Farmland Reserve, where he worked in managing agricultural real estate assets. He later transitioned to Maverik as the Director of Accounting, and he currently serves as Controller. During his tenure at Maverik, he has played a key role in supporting the company’s significant growth—from approximately 270 convenience stores to more than 825 locations and expanding.
During this Business Forum, Curtis will discuss the challenges his Treasury Team faced managing cash, debt and banking relationships while rapidly expanding business operations.
Brett B. Killpack grew up in Brigham City, Utah. He earned both his undergraduate degree and master’s degree from Utah State University. While attending school, he worked for Wasatch Property Management and later spent six years in the KPMG Salt Lake City office. He has been with Maverik for five years and currently serves as a Divisional CFO.
Throughout his career, Brett has led significant accounting process changes and integration efforts at Maverik. He was involved in the financial integration and process transformation following the Kum & Go acquisition, helping align accounting policies, reporting structures, and systems. This work required close collaboration with senior leadership, external auditors, and cross-functional teams to ensure accuracy, scalability, and compliance while maintaining business momentum.
During this Business Forum, Brett will share the history of Maverik, its growth over the years, and his perspectives on leading through complexity. He will discuss the importance of disciplined financial frameworks and how thoughtful change management can enable organizations to scale, integrate acquisitions, and make better decisions.
